OneColo FAQ

What is a Cloud Service?

Cloud services are application and infrastructure resources that exist on the Internet. Third-party providers contract with subscribers for these services, allowing customers to leverage powerful computing resources without having to purchase or maintain hardware and software.

Today, rather than owning their computing infrastructure or data centers, companies can rent access to anything from applications to storage. What that means is that if you have a supplier that handles and processes your company's healthcare data, for instance, they may be storing and processing your information in the cloud, either by outsourcing services or in some cases using an internal cloud or “private cloud” that they developed themselves by implementing it within the organization's dedicated resources, and infrastructure services.

How are Cloud Services Used?

Software Development

Because of the cloud’s flexibility, users can build environments and test them quickly. What previously took months to provision can now take just a few minutes, which is a perfect scenario for highly iterative processes, such as software development.

Web Hosting

Organizations often use Cloud Services for web hosting so they can balance the traffic load across multiple servers and scale up and down quickly and automatically as traffic fluctuates. The ability to provision and implement automatic scaling simplifies the whole process and takes out much of the administrative input and maintenance required.

Cloud Storage

You can store data and files in the cloud, making them available everywhere you want to whomever you want. This is especially helpful as employees and contractors work from home during health-related shutdowns.

Hybrid cloud and Multi-Cloud

Most serious environments, especially in well-established businesses, still need to access on-premises resources like files or services. With a hybrid cloud model, you can allow cloud resources secure access to your on-premises servers through, for example, a virtual network. This makes the cloud an extension of your on-premises systems.
