What Is Ceph and How Does It Work?

Ceph is an open-source, software-defined storage platform designed for high performance, scalability, and fault tolerance. It enables organizations to unify block, object, and file storage under a single distributed system?ideal for modern cloud infrastructure and enterprise applications.

How Ceph Works
At the heart of Ceph is RADOS (Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store), which distributes data across a cluster of storage nodes for redundancy and resilience. Ceph eliminates traditional hardware bottlenecks by using intelligent software to manage data placement and replication.

Key components include:

  • CRUSH Algorithm: Ceph?s unique placement algorithm that determines where data is stored, ensuring balanced distribution without central control.
  • OSDs (Object Storage Daemons): Handle data storage, replication, and recovery across drives in the cluster.
  • MONs (Monitors): Maintain the health and status of the cluster, ensuring quorum and coordination.
  • MDS (Metadata Servers): Optimize file system performance by managing metadata when using Ceph

Why Ceph?

  • Scalable: Grow from a few terabytes to petabytes with no disruption.
  • Resilient: Automated replication and self-healing protect against hardware failure.
  • Flexible: Supports S3-compatible object storage, block devices for VMs, and POSIX-compliant file systems.

At OneColo, we deploy advanced storage technologies like Ceph to power reliable and efficient infrastructure solutions for our clients. Whether you?re running cloud services, virtualization, or high-demand applications, Ceph provides the backbone for scalable and secure data storage.
